Magnified, sanctified
Be the holy name
Feel the fire, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the help that never came
You want it darker
We killed the flame
His songs, novels and poetry changed my heart and my life.
He was one of last aesthets. One of those who believes and make you believe in everyday’s romance…
He was one of the most enigmatic poets and songwriters ever.
Many of his songs still can’t be understood by majority because of his own code of life…
Andrew Eldritch named his band The Sisters of Mercy after a song of Cohen.
My favourite songs “You want it darker”, “Evybody knows”, “Dance me to the end of love”, “In my secret life”, “I’m your man” are endless athems of life, death & love.
Irony, sarcasm, appropriate seriousness and again – genuine love of life and uncompromising romance… I learned a lot from him.
And everybody knows that it’s now or never
Everybody knows that it’s me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you’ve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe’s still pickin’ cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
That’s how it goes
But most of all I’ve learned from him to value each word I say and each word I hear.
Cohen predicted his own death in song and in letter to his dying muse and ex-girlfriend Marianne Ihlen: “I will follow you very soon”. She died in this July and he wrote to tell her, “If you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine”.
In his last song, published some months ago, “You want it darker”, he said: I’m ready, My Lord.
Rest in peace and farewell, Mr. Cohen. We killed the flame.
I’ll just put these words from your last song here.
If you are the dealer
I’m out of the game
If you are the healer it means
I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory then
Mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flameMagnified, sanctified
Be the holy name
Feel the fire, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the help that never came
You want it darkerImeni, imeni
I’m ready, My LordThere’s a lover in the story
But the story’s still the same
There’s a lullaby for suffering
And a paradox to blame
But it’s written in the scriptures
And it’s not some idol claim
You want it darker
We killed the flameYou’re lining up to prisoners
And the guards are taking him
I struggle with some demons
They were middle class and dean
I didn’t know I had permission
To murder and to mend
You want it darkerImeni, imeni
I’m ready, My LordMagnified, sanctified
Be the holy name
Feel the fire, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the love that never came
You want it darker
We killed the flameIf you are the dealer
Let me out of the game
If you are the healer
I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory
Mine must be the shame
You want it darkerImeni, imeni
Imeni, imeni
I’m ready, My LordImeni
Imeni
